1st International Symposium on Interactive Cinema (ICS 2006)
Themes and Goals
Today, as special effects, computer animation, and games mature and become commoditized, we must strive to view advanced technology as an enabler to try out new ideas and perhaps tell a story which otherwise could not be told. We must avoid fixating on technology for technology sake, and loosing site of what the audience experience will be. In order to have a credible dialog around interactive cinema, we will need to define the boundaries of the discussion. Additionally, to fully explore the dependencies between what the audience will experience, who will pay money for it, the technology required to create that new experience, and the computing environment required for that experience. For example, are the current computing environments such as a set top box, a personal computer, a HDTV, a game console, etc. sufficient, or do we need to invent a new computing environment explicitly for interactive cinema?
The goal of ICS-06 is to create a multi-disciplinary environment, which fosters creativity and serves to enable a balanced discussion on what it would take to create a new Òinteractive cinemaÓ market and how it could impact the worldwide entertainment industry. To accomplish our goal, we plan to bring together a small group of producers, directors, executives, artists, and a cross section of hardware and software technologists. Our hope is that ICS-06 will give producers, directors and artists, insight into what Òinteractive cinemaÓ is, and a better idea of how to create within this new genre. Finally, it is the explicit goal of ICS-06 to provide executives and their hardware / software architects a better idea of what technology needs to be developed to explicitly enable the interactive cinema genre.
In short ICS-06 will strive to address:
- WhatÕs the new artistic form of expression?
- What's the business that would support such a new creative form of expression?
- What's the technology required to enable such a new form of expression?
